From sadness, grief, through numbness, apathy, non-commitment, all the way though happiness, joy, and enlightenment.
When we transform from one level to a higher one, then there is a release of energy, in two ways. One is the release of the negative aspect, so freeing us. The other is the release of a more abundant energy that flows through us when we have access to the higher level states.

Think about some of these statements, and the kind of life that you would live if you habitually lived by them:

I can't...

I have to...

I should...

I must...

I can...

I will...

Each one of those statements has a particular state attached to it, and effects the quality of the results that are created. People that live in survival and impossiblity, are not necessarily going to be creating from a openly creative state.

Inspiration comes when we open to the greater possibility inherent in our situation, no matter how challenging. The human ability to transform our state is a powerful gift.

One of the elements of Transformational Leadership is Inspirational Motivation.
To stir the mind, feelings, or imagination of those around you.

What are you regularly inspring in others and in yourself?

Warmest regards

Richard

CIPD Leadership Conference - 3rd June 2008 - London

In today's competitive environment strong leadership is key to organisational success.

Transformational Leadership can give you the edge over your competition.See how HR and business leaders can work together to create an environment of sustainable high performance.

Transform your organisation by discovering the latest leadership techniques, exploring the latest research into global leadership trends and learning innovative new ways to develop talented leaders for the future.

Areas that will be covered:

-leadership development
-developing a leadership culture
-collaborative leadership
-diversity and leadership
-employee engagement
http://www.cipd.co.uk/cande/leadership

Regards

Richard

Transformational Leadership & the Wisdom Age

In Stephen Covey’s 8th Discipline, he outlines the transformation of our working lives from an Industrial age to a Knowledge worker age. Anyone would agree that certainly our first world economies are firmly rooted in the knowledge worker age, whereas our third world economies are perhaps a bit behind that.

What comes after the Knowledge worker is the Age of Wisdom, and it is Transformational Leadership that lubricates the transition between the two.
In a knowledge filled world, we have access to huge quantities of information, especially via the internet. We get to take in, process and make use of more information than ever before. This does not mean that it is ever turned into Wisdom.

INFORMATION KNOWLEDGE WISDOM
Data Applied Reflection over time

We can apply, process and refine all the data we want to in the pursuit of Wisdom, but if our efforts remain in the transactional realm, merely shifting the data around, breaking it apart and reconstituting it, we miss the vital element of our own reflection. Without our own reflection over time we stay in the realm of the mind, and never reach the transformational levels to really break through.

A transformational leader will most likely be pressed for time, especially during the early stage of perhaps crises, and so it is important to break away from the never-ending grind of slogging away, and lead some personal transformation. Making time to reflect during the day, or perhaps before or after, creates space in our compact lives. Many of the most successful top executives take time to reflect or meditate during the day. In a world that we do not have complete control over, having this time is time that you control. Transformational leadership can be a demanding undertaking, and if you are the leader, but burning out, how will your team see you, and more importantly, who will they be copying.

As we move from being efficient with our time and energy, how do we make the move to being really great at who we are, and what we do? How to we make the leap of faith to surrender and trust in our purpose, letting go of the need to control all that happen around us?

When will we have the wisdom to let life guide us, to make the time to reflect and listen to our instincts and follow them, in line with life?
Our world is driven by our driveness, at the expense of humanity. We forsake our higher purposes to be slave to our lower desires, and then complain that we are not making progress.

Transformational Leadership calls us to take a stand for something greater in our world. To choose to follow our higher calling in life, and to call others to do the same. To invite others to access their own transformational leadership potential, and bring it into the world, in the service of humanity and our collective good.

In our wisdom, we can do this. I can do this, You can do this.

Transformational Leadership Roles and Authenticity

Dear Leader

One of the most powerful ways you can genuinely reach people as a Transformational Leader is to be authentic. This, in essence, means that you are yourself when you engage others through your leadership. Now obviously, you are always going to be you, but hat we are talking about here is the Authentic you as apposed to the role you play.

If you consider two interactions, one being a natural easy flowing, authentic and the other being formal, role-based, transactional and black & white. The first interaction between a Transformational Leader and the other or group will have a dimension to it that the other lacks. It will feel different to those involved. There will be a BEING quality to it, not just a DOING. Successful transformational leadership takes this into account, for to focus on just one dimension of leadership is to be ineffective.

"If you only have a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail"
- Abraham Maslow -

In transformational leadership it would be easy to get caught in role playing, rather than being your natural self, infused with the skills and qualities of an effective transformational leader. That is why you cannot just read a book on transformational leadership and then go out and implement it. Of course you still need to go out there and take step after step, trying new elements out and see what fits your context.

There is an experiential element that can only be developed by BEING, rather than DOING. When you find your zone or flow you will be balancing these. When this natural balance is in process, you will notice your Presence having a direct impact or influence on your surroundings in a harmonious way. Synchronicity will begin to play a part in your life and work.

The key to all this is awareness.

Can you watch yourself in your role, and see the bigger picture than just your immediate action?

Are you completely consumed by your role or are you able to allow your authenticity to shine through and touch the hearts, minds and souls of those that you lead?

Do the people that you lead trust you as a human, or are they just acting out their agreed role with yours?

Try out something new, and see if it works for you
Warmest regards

Richard

More Transformational Leaders Needed in UK

The lack of availability of leadership skills was recently identified by chief executives in the UK as the biggest threat to UK growth. With Hillary Clinton and Obama Barack in the running, this provides an interesting scenario for us to relate to Transformational Leadership and Transactional Leadership.

According to some, Obama seems to have qualities of a Transformational Leader. He is certainly charasmatic in the way he is appealing to the American people. In a time that requires transformational leadership, we have someone like Barack that has the potential to deliver that reality.

The question is, are the American people that are casting their votes ready for that kind of leadership? Many speak of wanting a great leader to transform the way we are with each other, ourselves and the world. Does it really take another Great Leader to do this for us, or has the time come for each one of us to be our own transformational leader?

Whether or not Obama Barack is voted in to being the President of the USA, there still exists the ever real and present opportunity for each one of us to claim our part in the transformation of ourselves and the world around us. If we wait for others to do this, it may never happen. We must lead the charge, and vote for empowered, enlightened leaders to collectively show us the way on a global scale.

Have a great week,

Regards

Richard

Personal Transformational Leadership Path

Hello Transformational Leaders

The path to being a successful Transformational Leader starts with personal leadership.

Its about knowing yourself and having a a clear personal vision. Personal Leadership is a state of mind and heart. Personal leaders realize that leadership is not a position or title, but an outlook on life and their role in the world.

It's about accepting responsibility for your own life, what has to be achieved and how to live it. Having a willingness to acknowledge your personal strengths and weaknesses. Being mindful of choices you have made. A willingness to confront oneself with care, recognizing and acknowledging own emotions and the power that they have. Recognizing that true power is comes from within you.

Why wait for some life-changing event to happen to you to shake you up and "tell" you that you need to effect changes in your life when can you take action and reap the benefits for yourself now?

So, what is the one thing that would get you moving in the direction of Personal Leadership development?

What is the one thing, that if you did it, would transform your life and leadership ability?

Take a breathe, look deep inside and go for it.
It takes courage, and it is worth it.

Warm regards

Richard Cox

What is important to you?

Hello Transformational Leader,

What is important to you in this world? What is it that gets you going every morning?
Is it family, money, health, wealth, happiness, fame? What about other aspects like commitment, passion, desire, willingess, obligation or drivenness?

Each one of us has a unique set of values that guides our motivation and action. They provide sources of energy that we use to create the outcomes and goals in our lives. To find out what you values are, simply ask

"What is important to me about ......?" (work, family, life, money, leadership, play, etc)

Keep on asking the question and allow yourself to go deep into what is most important to you. Write each word or phrase down as you go, and then take a breath and ask the question again.
In this way, you can discover what is REALLY motivating and inspiring you to do what you do.

When you know what is underneath your actions, you may find that it makes more sense, and you will be able to align your goals and outcomes to be more in line with your values. There are of course ways in which you can reset your values. One is NLP techiniques, which has various methods that can be used to achieve eliciting values.

An aspect of Transformational Leadership is inspired change, from personal and group perspective. As a transformational leader, it is valuable to be able to know what your and those around you value. When you know this, you can tap huge energy reserves that were not previously available. When you individually consider each persons values, and then align that with the work they do, extraordinary results are possible.

To your ongoing transformation and leadership development

Warm regards

Richard

Transformational Leadership: Integrity matters

Hi Transformational Leader

Do you what to develop the personal power to lead change in yourself and others?
Do you want what you do to be aligned with who you are?
Do you want to create unshakable trust with people in your life and business?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, here is the next one....

How is your integrity?
Now that may be a bold question to ask, yet it is a very powerful one, if your are willing to answer it.

Keeping your integrity makes a huge difference when it comes to generating personal power, aligning your purpose, and creating trust. As you probably well know, it takes a while for trust to be created, and sometimes a small event to make it breakdown.

Integrity may have different meanings for different people. One way of describing it could be - "Doing what you say you will". This could be as simple as making your bed, or taking your kid to the movies when you said you would. It could be going to the gym, or something as simple as making a followup call when you said you would. Being on time is another way of keeping your integrity.

You see, your mind is constantly watching you, to see if you will keep your word. If you do, it becomes your most powerful supporter. On the other hand, if you beep on breaking your word, your mind may not support you in creating the change you want to see in your life and business.

In Transformational Leadership, we have an important task ahead of us. We have a responsibility to lead the change, by first leading our own change. As Ghandi said "Be The Change You Want To See In The World".

To your ongoing transformation and leadership development

Richard

Global Environmental Crisis Mapping

Dear Transformational Leaders

Here is something we all need to see. She is getting a bit hot under the collar, and probably wouldn't think too much about wiping us off her face, like she did with the dinosaurs. Considering that the dinosaurs lived for hundreds of thousands of years, and some still live today, I would consider them pretty adaptable. Humans seem to be having some big challenges with changing these days, and yet we have the arrogance to mock the dinosaurs.

So what is it going to take for human beings to start working together on a global level, when we have such deep challenges working together in our own lives. Let alone that, but even with OURSELVES we have deep issues that we find hard to address, let alone speak about. We hide from the truth like it will kill us, and miss the opportunity to free ourselves and others in the process. Yes, some part of us may die (our ego), but then again, was it not what was causing the problem anyway?

Our current global, business, political and social leaders are starting to get the message, and there is movement to a greater awakening to the seriousness of our current situation. But is it going to work? Are we addressing the core issues, or have we missed something in our attempt to FIX the situation? Are we missing an enormous opportunity to transform what it means to be human? A chance to see into the future for 1000's of years, and see our speciaes make a powerful contribution to the way life evolves?

Is Transformational Leadership something that will contribute to the evolution of humankind? If it is, how can we get it out there more effectively? How can we get it into the hearts and minds of the people around us? How can we live the principles and ideals that stand for transformation and leadership in our world, be it on a micro or macro level?

I don't believe that it is the ONLY solution, but I do believe that if we started treating and leading each other the way Transformational Leadership suggests, it could make a significant impact on the way we create our future.

Find out more about it in our Resources and Articles section.

To your ongoing Transformational Leadership development.
Warm regards

Richard

TEN POWERFUL STEPS TO TRANSFORMATION

by John R. Barker...

Beliefs create potential. Potential enables action. Action produces results. Transformation is the process of becoming, or recognizing we already are who we desire to be. Embodying these following ten points will transform your life and create whatever you desire.

1. Willingness.
Willingness is a combination of intention and faith. You must be willing to become vulnerable enough to merge with your new creation as an act of love and faith. And you must be willing to let go of what you hold on to now in order to grow and become.

2. Have a clear idea.
We are all an idea away from transformation. In order to transform, we must be absolutely clear what it is we desire to transform our Self into.

3. Assume the identity.
We are all actors playing the role we know best – our Self; or more accurately, who we THINK our Self to be. We naturally assume different identities in different company, on different occasions. Create your dream role and act it out.

4. Feel yourself transformed.
Transformation is not a thought process; it is a feeling.

5. Transformation is a spiritual experience.
Transformation is an act of creation, which cannot be intellectualized. It is a feeling, like riding a bike or being in love which we cannot forget – or capture with words. Transformation is a feeling that is with us the rest of our life.

6. Assume a higher concept of yourself.
One can be no greater than their imagination allows them to be. You are nothing more – or less – than who you feel yourself to be. All limitations are only thoughts.
Thinking will not solve your problems. That is an illusion. Because you only know what you know and what you think you know has created the current situation.
Instead, take a short cut. Allow yourself to feel how you want to feel and your thoughts and actions will align with those feelings. You will notice feelings of resistance come up to feeling how you want to feel. This is why I recommend the Release Technique above.

7. Stop spending, start investing.
This includes not only money, but also our time and our thoughts. Every thought is an investment in your future. Invest wisely. Invest consistently.

8. Narrow your focus.
Transformation requires discipline. It requires leaders who are willing and able to learn and adapt. And for when change really bites, today’s leaders need to demonstrate a consistent set of values and behaviours in order to create continuity and a foundation of trust

Transformational leadership is about taking people beyond what they would normally achieve by motivating and inspiring them to exceed their goals. His name is Harvey Robbins and he has a real, clear and to the point way of saying things. I found two of his blog posts upfront and really helped to verify some common thinking errors about leadership.

Some people may say " Why am I sharing a resource that is in competition to mine?"
Well, to be honest, it is just too good not to share. So here it is:

Leadership Skills: The Myth of Leadership
http://www.harveyrobbins.com/2007/09/16/leadership-skills-the-myth-of-leadership/

"If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants."
- Sir Isaac Newton -

Warm regards

Richard

Do you live Transformational Leadership?

Hi

So you've read the theory of how Transformational Leadership works, you may have attended some training or even tried some the of the new ways of being out, with success or failure.

But do you LIVE it?

There is a difference between knowing something and living it. You might learn something new in your life, but until it becomes part of you, it might just dissapear overnight, if you don't keep your eye on it. When you LIVE it, the new way of being, habit behaviour or perspective is inside you. You do not have to MAKE it happen, it happens naturally. IT is part of your daily awareness and program.

Being a Transformational Leader requires a commitment to BE something different. Yes it's about leading change in ourganisations and others, but do you lead it in yourself? Are you familiar with your own resistance and what it takes for youto change.

When you LIVE something, it speaks through you. You don't have to become something ever time you want to make an impact. You make an impact because of who you are firstly, and then because of what you do - both are important and work hand in hand. This goes for Transformational Leadership and Transactional Leadership. both work hand in hand. Its not that one is "better" than the other. They are part of the same system, just different expressions of your potential.

There is the lesson of a Cherokee man teaching his grandchildren about life.

He says to them,
“A fight is going on inside me. It is between two wolves:
One wolf is evil—he is fear, anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, anxiety, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, competition and superiority.
The other wolf is good—he is joy, peace, love, hope, sharing, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, friendship, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, faith and laughter.”

He then tells his grandchildren that the same fight is going on inside of them and also inside of every person. The children think about this for a moment and then one of them asks his grandfather,
“Which wolf will win?”

The old man then replies,
“The one that you feed.”

A Transformational Leadership Movie

Transformational Leadership often involves taking charge of a situation that otherwise would have been failure, or at least failed to achieve its outcomes. When this creates losses in financial business, often times we can become frustrated or disappointed- when it costs lives, that's when it really means business, and human beings have the ability to stand up and take action.

On the subject of war, and fighting for what you believe in, here is a movie worth seeing:

Twelve O'clock High (1949)

A fantastic movie about leadership - a study of transactional, transitional and transformational leadership. Starring Gregory Peck, the movie is set in World War II and revolves around the 918th US Bomber group stationed in England . Although their commander is an efficient leader, he does not have what it takes to lead the team to victory, and they suffer heavy casualties .

Another commander replaces him, and effectively guides and leads the group to become one of the best bomber groups. He pushes his men to the limit and helps them discover their own strengths. This give them a sense of empowerment and pride in themselves.

It is available from Amazon.
Enjoy it, and I look forward to hearing your comments.

Warm regards

Richard

Transformational Leadership: New Applications - papers and studies

Hello Transformational Leader

On Monday, Aug 6 2007, there was a gathering of researchers and authors of papers and studies on Transformational Leadership in Philadelphia, USA.

Some of the topics were:

- Spirituality, Values and Transformational Leadership: Relationship with Identity and Performance

- The Influence of Transformational Leadership on Newcomers’ Union Attitudes: A Longitudinal Study

- Moderator or Mediator? This is a fairly difficult thing to convey in writing as it is really about the way you experience yourself. My authenticity is completely different to yours, and yet there are some similarities. I would suggest that being authentic as a transformational leader is a key to having a powerful effect in the environments that you operate in. Without it, your effors would be hampered.

There is a great article on Where Transformational Leadership and Authenticity meet - check it out.

To your ongoing transformation and leadership

Warm regards

Richard

transformational leadership

New articles published to Articles section

Hello Transformational leaders.

There have been several new articles uploaded, with some great info on what it takes to be a transformational leader.

Here are the titles:

Are you a Transformational Leader?

Transformational leadership behaviors

Is business becoming more spiritual?

Please let me know what kind of information on Transformational leadership you are a looking for.
Have a great week!

Warm regards

Richard

Transformational Leadership at the Movies

Hi

I recently came across a website that highlights the aspects of Transformational Leadership in several movies. This site is great as it contrasts the differences between Transaction Leadership, and several other leadership theories, siteing well know movies.

Here is the site:
http://www.centerforleaderdevelopment.com/blog/?page_id=14

You will probably recognise, or even have seen some of these movies!

Transformational leadership is defined by individualized consideration (IC), intellectual stimulation (IS), inspirational motivation (IM), and idealized influence (II). These factors, along with contingent reward (a transactional factor), have been shown to improve subordinate productivity, increase morale, foster organizational effectiveness and lower absenteeism.

Examples of movies for each category are provided on their site.

To your ongoing development

Warm regards<br
